How Custom Jewelry Works: From Idea to Finished Piece

The idea of a custom-designed piece of jewelry sounds exciting — and it is. But for most people, the process is a complete mystery. What exactly happens between "I have an idea" and holding the finished ring in your hands? At Atelier Diamante, we believe demystifying that process is part of our job. Here's how it works.

Step One: The Consultation

Everything begins with a conversation. We want to understand what you're envisioning, who it's for, what she loves (or what you love), what your lifestyle looks like, and what your budget is. You don't need to arrive with a fully formed idea — some of our best work has started with nothing more than "I want something that feels vintage but isn't too fussy" or "I want the biggest diamond possible in a simple setting."

We ask questions. We show reference images. We explore shapes, metals, setting styles, and diamond options. By the end of the first conversation, we typically have a clear enough direction to move forward with design.

Step Two: Diamond Selection

If the piece includes a center diamond — which most engagement ring projects do — diamond selection typically happens early in the process. We source stones that match your criteria and budget, present options with detailed specs and imagery, and guide you through the comparison.

For lab-grown diamonds, we present IGI-certified stones with full grading reports. For natural diamonds, we work with trusted suppliers who meet our sourcing standards. You don't purchase the diamond blind — we make sure you understand and are genuinely excited about what you're choosing.

Step Three: Design and CAD Rendering

Once we have design direction and a diamond selected, our designers create a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) rendering — a precise 3D digital model of the ring. This lets you see exactly how the piece will look before a single gram of metal is poured.

We share the CAD with you for review. This is the stage for adjustments — proportions, prong style, band width, profile, surface texture, accent stone placement. We refine until it's right. Most projects require one or two rounds of revisions at this stage.

Step Four: Production

Once the design is approved, we move into production. The CAD is used to create a precise wax model, which is then cast in your chosen metal using the lost-wax casting method — a technique used in fine jewelry for centuries. After casting, the piece enters the finishing process: filing, polishing, stone setting, and quality inspection.

For pavé or accent stone settings, skilled setters place each stone individually by hand. This is meticulous, time-intensive work — and it's what separates a well-made piece from a factory-produced one.

Step Five: Quality Review and Delivery

Before any piece leaves our atelier, it goes through a thorough quality review. We check the setting security of every stone, inspect the metalwork under magnification, verify the measurements against the approved design, and ensure the finish meets our standards.

When it passes, we photograph it and reach out to arrange delivery or pickup. The entire process — from first consultation to finished piece — typically takes 4–6 weeks, depending on complexity and the time of year.

Is Custom Right for You?

Custom isn't just for unusual ideas or unlimited budgets. It's for anyone who wants exactly what they want rather than the closest approximation they could find. Many of our custom pieces are beautifully simple — a classic solitaire in a specific proportion, a three-stone ring with a precise stone combination, a signet ring with personal engraving.

If you have a vision — even a vague one — we'd love to talk through it. Book a consultation and let's see what we can create together.
