How to Measure Your Ring Size

The most accurate measurements come from a professional ring sizer — ask Dave to bring one to your consultation. If you're measuring at home before your appointment, here are three methods in order of reliability.

01

String or Paper Wrap

The most accessible home method. Cut a thin strip of paper or non-stretchy string about 6 inches long.

  1. Wrap the strip snugly around the base of your finger — not too tight, not too loose. It should slide off with slight resistance.
  2. Mark where the strip overlaps with a pen.
  3. Lay the strip flat and measure the length from the end to your mark in millimeters.
  4. This gives you the circumference of your finger. Find it in the size chart below to identify your ring size.
Tip: Measure at the end of the day when fingers are slightly larger from warmth and activity. Cold fingers read smaller than warm ones.
02

Measure an Existing Ring

If your partner already owns a ring that fits the correct finger, measuring it is the most reliable home method.

  1. Select a ring that fits the engagement ring finger (left hand, ring finger for most US wearers).
  2. Using a ruler, measure the inner diameter of the ring in millimeters — the distance straight across the inside of the band at its widest point.
  3. Find that measurement in the Diameter (mm) column of the size chart below.
Tip: Place the ring on a white sheet of paper, trace the inner circle, and measure the traced circle — this can be more accurate than measuring the ring itself.
03

Printable Ring Sizer

Several jewelry industry organizations offer printable ring sizers you can download, print, and use to compare against an existing ring or slip onto a finger.

  1. Search "printable ring sizer PDF" — the Jewelry Information Center and Blue Nile both offer reliable free versions.
  2. Print at 100% scale (do not use "fit to page" — this changes proportions).
  3. Verify print accuracy by checking the 1-inch reference ruler on the sizer sheet before using.
  4. Place your existing ring over the circles to find your size, or use the strip version to measure your finger directly.
Tip: When in doubt, bring your best estimate to your consultation. Dave will have a physical ring sizer and can confirm your size accurately before the ring enters production.

What Affects Fit

Temperature and Time of Day

Fingers are smallest in the morning when cold and largest in the evening after activity. For the most reliable measurement, measure at the end of the day at room temperature. If you have to choose between two sizes, lean toward the one that matches your typical active state.

Band Width Matters

Wide bands (5mm+) fit tighter than narrow bands of the same nominal size. If you're designing a wide-band ring or a band with a thick setting, consider going a half size up from your standard measurement. Dave accounts for this during the design process.

Knuckle vs. Base

Some people have significantly larger knuckles than finger bases — the ring needs to clear the knuckle and still fit snugly at the base. For these cases, Dave may recommend a hinged shank or comfort fit band that slides over the knuckle and sits securely at the base.

Dominant Hand vs. Other

Most people's dominant hand is slightly larger than the other. If your partner wears the ring on their dominant hand (some left-handed people prefer this), measure that hand specifically. The difference is usually half a size.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is the most common situation — and it's completely fine. There are a few reliable approaches: check her existing rings (with the method above), ask a family member who might know, or simply propose with the ring and resize afterward. Because every Atelier Diamante ring includes a free lifetime resize, a size that's slightly off isn't a problem. Dave also stocks a range of sizing rings you can discreetly borrow to check.
Nothing. Every ring we make comes with a free lifetime resize. This covers standard sizing up or down. If the resize requires significant structural modification — for example, resizing a heavily engraved eternity band — we'll discuss any additional considerations with you first, but the standard case is always complimentary.
A standard resize — one or two sizes in either direction — typically takes 5–10 business days. Rush options are available for time-sensitive situations. Dave will give you an exact timeline when you bring the ring in.
Most rings can be resized 1–2 sizes in either direction without issue. Eternity bands (diamonds all the way around) and rings with very intricate engraving on the band are more complex — they can sometimes be resized by adding or removing material, or by recutting, but options are limited. Dave will flag these during the design process and plan accordingly.
For most rings, half sizes are available — and we recommend ordering the half size rather than rounding to a whole size. If a half size still feels like a toss-up, consider the band width: wider bands fit tighter, so size up. Narrower bands can size down. And again — if you're unsure, we resize for free.
