Natural Pink Diamonds: Rarity, the Argyle Closure, and What They Actually Cost
Pink is the only major diamond color that nobody can fully explain. Yellow comes from nitrogen. Blue comes from boron. Pink comes from something that happened to the crystal — and the mine that produced almost all of it closed in 2020.
That combination, an unexplained cause and a vanished supply, is why pink diamonds behave unlike anything else in the stone market. This guide covers what actually creates the color, what the Argyle closure did and didn't change, how pinks are graded, what natural and lab-grown pinks genuinely cost, and how to think about acquiring one without getting hurt.
What Makes a Pink Diamond Pink
Almost every colored diamond owes its color to an impurity trapped in the carbon lattice. Nitrogen produces yellow. Boron produces blue. Pink has no such impurity.
The prevailing explanation is structural: at some point during the stone's journey toward the surface, enormous pressure distorted the crystal lattice itself. Those deformation planes absorb green light and transmit pink. You can often see them under magnification as fine parallel lines, sometimes called graining or "pink lamellae", running through the stone.
Two consequences follow, and both matter when you're choosing one. Pink color is frequently uneven, because the deformation isn't uniform and can concentrate in bands. And because the cause is physical rather than chemical, it cannot be reliably predicted or targeted in the ground. Pinks are found, not sought.
The Argyle Closure, and What It Actually Meant
The Argyle mine in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia produced somewhere above ninety percent of the world's pink diamonds for nearly four decades. Rio Tinto closed it in November 2020, having exhausted the economically viable ore.
It is worth being precise about what that does and doesn't mean, because the category is full of overstatement.
It does mean the dominant source of natural pink is gone and will not reopen. Argyle's output was already tiny — a fraction of one percent of its production was gem-quality pink, and the annual tender offered only a few dozen stones. Removing that supply from a market with steady demand had exactly the effect you would expect.
It does not mean natural pinks have stopped existing. Stones continue to surface from Brazil, Russia, South Africa and Canada, and a great deal of Argyle material is already in circulation. What changed is that new supply at the top grades is now genuinely scarce rather than merely rare.
How Pink Is Graded
Natural pinks are graded on the GIA fancy color system, on hue, tone and saturation together. GIA lists the grades in order of increasing color strength: Faint → Very Light → Light → Fancy Light → Fancy → Fancy Intense → Fancy Vivid → Fancy Dark → Fancy Deep. Dark and Deep describe darker-toned stones and sit after Vivid rather than beneath it, though the market still pays most for Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid. Two things specific to pink are worth knowing.
Modifiers move the price more than they do in other colors. A straight "Fancy Intense Pink" is worth considerably more than a "Fancy Intense Purplish Pink" or "Orangy Pink" of the same grade and weight. Read the hue description on the report, not just the grade.
Argyle stones carry their own vocabulary. The mine graded on its own scale, where a stone might be described as 1PP or 3PR. Those designations still trade at a premium because provenance is now finite. If a seller mentions an Argyle grade, ask for the Argyle certificate as well as the GIA report.
Why Pinks Trade Unlike Any Other Diamond
Three structural differences separate this market from the white diamond market.
Clarity almost stops mattering. The saturated color hides inclusions that would be plainly visible in a colorless stone. Paying for a high clarity grade in a pink is usually paying for a certificate.
Carat matters far less than saturation. A one-carat Fancy Vivid will outprice a three-carat Fancy Light comfortably. In white diamonds, weight dominates; here, color does.
The certificate tells you less than usual. Because pink color is often distributed unevenly, two stones with identical grades can look entirely different face-up. This is the single strongest argument in the whole category for having someone look at the stone rather than reading its paperwork.
How a Pink Diamond Handles Light
Three separate optical effects get bundled together as "sparkle", and they are worth separating before you look at any stone.
Brilliance is white light returned to your eye — the overall brightness of the stone. Fire is light split into flashes of spectral color, the way a prism works. Scintillation is the on-off pattern as the stone, the light source or your own head moves: the contrast between facets flashing bright and going dark. Cut governs all three, and it governs them far more than color or clarity does. When a stone is cut to poor proportions, light entering the crown passes straight out through the pavilion instead of bouncing back to the eye — light leakage — and the center reads glassy or dark however good the grades on the report look.
Here is the honest caveat for every colored diamond, pink included. Colored stones are cut to maximize color, not brightness. Cutters leave deeper pavilions and adjust facet angles so light travels further through the colored material before it exits, because the longer that path, the more saturated the stone appears face-up. That choice costs brilliance. A Fancy Vivid pink will not return light the way an ideal-cut colorless round does, and it is not meant to. You are buying color, and the cut is spending brightness to buy it. Expected, not a flaw.
Shape matters too. The elongated shapes in the table below — the marquise especially, and pears and ovals — are prone to the bow-tie effect: a dark band across the waist of the stone where your own head blocks the light those facets need. Every elongated stone has one to some degree; the question is whether it is faint or whether it dominates the face, and it does not appear on a grading report. Emerald cuts make a different trade: step cuts give broad, slow flashes rather than fine scintillation, and they show color exceptionally evenly, which is part of why the two largest stones on our list are emerald cuts.
All of which is the same argument this page keeps making. With pink, the paperwork tells you less than usual, and someone has to look at the stone face-up in ordinary light.
Natural or Lab-Grown Pink: The Honest Position
We source both, so we have no reason to push you either way.
Lab-grown pink is produced by deliberately introducing lattice distortion after growth, which means it is created by the same mechanism that produces natural pink. Optically and chemically it is a pink diamond. It reaches Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid saturation reliably, at a small fraction of the natural price, and only laboratory equipment can identify its origin.
If what you want is the color on the hand, lab-grown pink is one of the strongest values in fine jewelry and we will say so plainly.
What you are not acquiring is scarcity. The entire basis of natural pink's value is that a finite quantity exists and no more is being made. If provenance is what draws you — the mine, the history, the fact that no two came from the same event — no lab stone substitutes for that, and we will say that too.

Read the third and fourth rows together and you can see saturation doing the work: a 2.10ct Fancy Pink at $4,191 against a 2.02ct Fancy Vivid at $6,573. Slightly less weight, roughly fifty percent more money, entirely because of color strength.
Natural pink sits in a different order of magnitude. A natural Fancy Intense or Vivid pink of a carat or more can reach six figures per carat at current levels, and Argyle-certified tender material has traded higher still. We don't publish a natural pink price list, because the honest answer is that each stone is priced individually against what has recently traded — and anyone quoting you a tidy per-carat number for natural pink is guessing. What we will do is find the stone, show you the comparables, and tell you whether the asking price is defensible.
Setting a Pink
Metal choice does more work here than with any white stone. Rose gold amplifies pink by sympathy and is the most forgiving choice for a lighter grade. Platinum and white gold create contrast, which reads cooler and more contemporary and tends to flatter stones that already have strong saturation. Yellow gold is the difficult one — it can pull an orangy modifier forward and mute the pink.
A halo of white diamonds around a pink center reliably lifts the apparent saturation by contrast, and it is the most common way to make a Fancy or Fancy Light stone read considerably stronger than its grade. It also adds scintillation the center stone deliberately gave up, which is a second reason halos suit colored diamonds so well.
